The Democratic Party in Rhode Island has lost its way as a result of its 40+ years of dominance of Rhode Island politics. One-party rule, regardless of party, inherently leads to ethical problems because no one wants to blow the whistle on their friends. In a healthy democracy, two or more political parties share the stage, debating issues and keeping a watchful eye on the other side's activities. In such a culture, those people inclined to weakness in the face of temptation are weeded out of the process early before they reach positions where their weakness can cause serious damage to the people. This does not happen in a one-party state.
Rhode Island is not a healthy democracy. This is not an attack on the Democratic Party. I grew up a Democrat, following the Irish-American tradition of Democratic politics. There are many good people in the Democratic Party both in Rhode Island and nationally. However, for this State's culture to change, for us to say to our children that we have an honest and ethical state government, we must break the one party dominance in the General Assembly. Each of you reading this, regardless of what label you attach to yourself and regardless of your views on particular issues, knows this in your heart. It is time to shake up the State House.
